What is IQ?
CI means"Intelligence quotient"and is a measure of human intelligence determined by standardized tests. It is expressed in aQI-Skalawhich is defined as most people with an IQ between 80 and 120 (cf.QI-Skalasection for more details and how to interpret your IQ score). It's not a very intuitive scale, many people want to see theirsPercentil de QIor weirdness, which our IQ percentile calculator above is ideal for.
Brief history of intelligence measurement
Attempts to measure intelligence date back to at least the 19th century, but well-developed tests weren't invented until the mid-20th century. Early applications included screening impoverished populations to screen talented students for recruitment into the US Army. These tests come in many forms: some are primarily visual, others include language and skills, basic math, three-dimensional spatial tasks, and logic questions, but what they all have in common is that they try to determine the g-factor, or common factor in performance. of a person Rate the person on all tasks: Intelligence.
The g factor was first observed by the British psychologist Charles Spearman, who noted a highcorrelationat grade levels in seemingly unrelated subjects, arguing that these correlations reflect the influence of a general mental ability that is expressed in all kinds of mental tasks. This was confirmed by the inability to generate mental tasks that are not g-loaded, i.e. performance on these tasks is not correlated with general intelligence.
Usefulness of IQ measurement
IQ test results are valuablebecause of its high or moderate correlation with morbidity, mortality, school performance, job performance, income, involvement in crime, and others[3,4,5,6]🇧🇷 They are among the most tested and researched concepts in psychology and psychometrics. As with any other statistical estimate, IQ scores can be problematic when used at an individual level, for example. While you would generally expect someone with a high IQ to do well in an engineering job, they can do worse than someone with a low IQ, even if they have the same education and experience. However, when trying to assess a person's aptitude for a mental task, the most informative information is an IQ percentile obtained from a reliable test.
The IQ Scale: How to Interpret an IQ Score
IQ tests are designed and updated regularly to match the populations they accurately measure: a score of 100 is the population mean, and the distribution of IQ scores and percentiles is in normal form with a standard deviation of 15. IQ So is convenient to interpret and work with if you're a statistician, but if you don't like statistics, the number itself probably means little to you. Here's ourQI percentile calculatorcan help you calculate the percentile of the population you are in and therefore the rarity of your score.
For example, with an IQ of 125, you would be in the top 5%, the 95th percentile of the population. This means that only 1 in 20 people randomly selected from a large population will have a score equal to or higher than yours. The following IQ scale shows whatpercentageof the population falls into different ranges of IQ scores, for example, 13.6% of people have an IQ score between 115 and 130 by definition.
Above is an IQ rarity chart (also known as an IQ percentile chart) showing what percentage of the population is between various values and what percentage of the population is above some key values.
IQ percentile and rarity
Below are some common cutoff points for IQ test scores and their corresponding percentiles and oddities.
IQ test result | percentile | superior a X% | rarity |
---|---|---|---|
100 | 50 | 50% | 1 em 2 |
104 | 60 | 40% | 1 em 2,7 |
108 | 70 | 30% | 1 em 3.3 |
110 | 75 | 25% | 1 of 4 |
113 | 80 | 20% | 1 of 5 |
115 | 84 | 15,87% | 1 em 6.3 |
119 | 90 | 10,00% | 1 of 10 |
125 | 95 | 5,00% | 1 of 20 |
129 | 97,5 | 2,50% | 1 of 40 |
135 | 99 | 1,00% | 1 of 100 |
139 | 99,5 | 0,50% | 1 of 215 |
147 | 99,9 | 0,10% | 1 em 1157 |
156 | 99,99 | 0,001% | 1 of 10,581 |
Let's say your IQ score is 120. You can check that row in the table and you'll see that you're in the 90th percentile, which is in the top 10% of the reference population. If you check the rarity column, you'll see that such a score is seen by around 1 in 10 people.chosen at random.
Some numbers in the table above are approximate for readability. Using the calculator above is the best way to get accurate numbers, whatever your IQ score: 120, 130, 135, 140, 142, 160... You'll see percentiles (80, 90, 95, 99, etc. ) according to the IQ scale and its rarity relative to one in X people. Similarly, you can use to show 99th percentile (135th) IQ score, etc.
Classification of intelligence scores
There are different ways to classify IQ scores, e.g. is the Stanford-Binet classification[1]:
- (40-54) - moderately worsened or delayed
- (55-69) - slightly worsened or delayed
- (70-79) - deteriorated or delayed limit
- (80-89) - medium low
- (90-109) - Average
- (110-119) - medium high
- (120-129) - superior
- (130-144) - gifted or highly developed
- (145-160) - very talented or very advanced
Others prefer more neutral and less descriptive terms, such as "low-end" and "high-end" or "extremely low" and "extremely high". It should be noted that this is all relative to the general population. A person with an IQ of 115 is likely to be in the lower echelons compared to a room full of nuclear physicists (with an average IQ of 130 or higher), despite being above that.Averagerelative to the general population.
Types of IQ Tests
existmany IQ teststhat you can take today is the most famous[2]:
- Raven's progressive matrices
- III Cattell Cultural Fair
- Reynolds scales for intellectual assessment
- Thurstone's Primary Mental Abilities
- Kaufman short intelligence test
- Fitness Multidimensional Battery II
- Das-Naglieri's cognitive assessment system
Most tests are standardized so that their mean score is 100 and their standard deviation is 15, which makes calculating a percentile using trivia.CDF normal distribution🇧🇷 Some tests use a different standard deviation: 16, 24, etc., which is oursQI calculatorlets you specify the standard deviation of the test that generated the IQ score.
How reliable are IQ measurements?
IQ scores obtained through rigorous testing by a trained psychologist or psychometrist are usually the most reliable and provide information about how well your cognitive skills are performing in addition to your IQ score (e.g., spatial reasoning, verbal ability, processing auditory). , short- and long-term memory, etc. Standardized tests conducted as part of a High IQ Society exam (eg Mensa) are also quite reliable. Finally, there are different types of online tests, free and paid, with varying degrees of reliability. In all cases a certain measurement error must be assumed, normally a measurement error of 3 points is taken into account. So if your score is 115, it's very likely that your actual score is between 112 and 118. Your average is often the best way to get a more reliable estimate of your general intelligence.
Younger people (under the age of 18) should be aware that an IQ score obtained on a standard IQ test will likely be lower than it really is, though not by much, especially if you are over 10 years old. Age test. 🇧🇷 The reason for lower scores could be that the brain is not yet fully developed (for men up to age 25!) and environmental factors have not had time to fully express themselves.
Can I increase my IQ?
If it's an IQ score from a test, there are ways to study the test questions and memorize the answers if you know which test will be given. However, this only reflects your exam ability and not your overall mental ability. With that in mind, it's possible to increase your IQ, but why would you do that? You can cheat on an IQ test or an IQ calculator, but not yourself or the people you interact with.
When it comes to increasing true intelligence, we really don't know how to go about it. There are studies that tell us that malnutrition, abuse, abandonment, etc. during childhood and adolescence can lead to lower intelligence; however, there is no known way to improve a person's general intelligence despite attempts to perform mental tasks, identify diet plans, lifestyle changes, etc. below the IQ percentile.
